The Norwegian Media Authority is an administrative body, placed under The Royal Ministry of Cultural and Church Affairs.
This division's responsibilities include processing applications for broadcasting licenses for local radio and television, satellite broadcasting, monitoring advertisements and sponsorship in broadcasts, imposing sanctions, etc.
The Norwegian Media Authority has licenced approximately 300 local radio stations. These are run by commercial companies, religious organisations, political parties, ethnic and linguistic minorities, educational institutions and various non-profit organisations. The Mass Media Authority has also issued licences for local terrestrial television in 30 areas.
